Understanding Hypnotism: What is hypnotism, and can it make changes in our lives?
Delving into the powers of suggestion, we will learn how to change habits, beliefs, phobias, and our abilities to accomplish tasks. Topics discussed will include: the origin, definition, and principles of hypnosis; the different types of hypnotism; the powers of persuasion; hypnotic susceptibility; potential dangers; the creation and destruction of habits, attachments or phobias; the placebo and nocebo effects; perceived suggestion or the illusionary truth effect; conspiracy theories; and the understanding of autogenic training. We will discover how each of us has become who we are today, and who we might be tomorrow.
Bio: Dr. Gary Truce is a professor emeritus from the Health and Wellness Studies Program which is a part of the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences at Binghamton University. He is also a certified professional hypnotist. He has worked as a therapist, a sport psychologist for numerous professional, amateur, and Olympic athletes and with actors and entertainers as well to help them overcome certain psychological fears and inhibitions. Lastly, Dr. Truce has worked as a hypnotist for police and detective agencies throughout the United States and the Virgin Islands, as well as for the Center for UFO Studies out of Evanston, Ill.
He has been a professor, researcher, consultant and therapist in the areas of psychophysiological functions, personal health, human behavior, and paranormal occurrences. The emphasis of his doctoral studies and work has been in the psychology relating to human behavior and functional capacities.
In 2016, Dr. Truce wrote and published a book on a true [spirit] case entitled, Shelly and Rhoda: A Most Extraordinary Spirit Encounter (Investigations into Paranormal Activities). He has also published a book of poetic writings in 2021 entitled, Voices on Visions. Dr. Truce’s research, investigations, and accomplishments have been written up in several newspapers, books and magazines over the years.
